Tony Morris
Tony Morris is heard by radio listeners on over 200 stations world-wide of the Classical Guitar Alive program. He is an active performer as both a solo guitarist and with flutist Renata Green. He has performed multiple times at the White House in Washington, DC, and was chosen by the US State Dept. to serve as a Cultural Envoy for a 2010 concert tour of Paraguay in honor of the 125th anniversary of the birth of Paraguayan guitarist-composer Agustin Barrios Mangore. He frequently serves as an adjudicator, lecturer, and served as adjunct guitar professor at Texas Lutheran University from 2006-2011. He is currently developing a new PBS television program with San Antonio PBS station KLRN, “American Classical.”

I play the viola, violin, guitar, and piano, more or less in that order. I started on the viola when I was 10; I was intrigued by its lack of popularity. I asked the orchestra teacher which instrument is the most ignored, and that was that. I took up the guitar a couple years later because my Dad had bought 6 months of lessons for my brother, who pretty much quit after the first couple lessons. Thomas Echols
Classical guitarist Thomas Echols is quickly being recognized, not only as a masterful recitalist, but as an engaging lecturer on contemporary repertoire for the guitar. His recent recital and lecture at the 2010 Guitar Foundation of America’s Annual Convention in Austin, Texas, inspired William Kanengiser of the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet to write great reviews. A prizewinner in the Portland International Guitar Competition and the Donald Miller Concerto Competition, major engagements have included the Whittier Bach Festival, Whittier, CA, the Hispanic-American Guitar Festival in Tijuana, Mexico, and a recital for the "Music at the Mansion" concert series in Los Angeles. Accepted at age 16 into the College of Music at the University of Colorado at Boulder, Echols was awarded a full scholarship to study with Dr. Charles Wolzien. He earned a Master of Music degree from the University of Texas at Austin, studying with renowned performer and pedagogue, Adam Holzman. He was awarded the Diploma di Merito from the prestigious Accademia Musicale in Siena, Italy, where he studied with Maestro Oscar Ghiglia. Dr. Echols holds a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Southern California, where he studied with William Kanengiser, Brian Head, and Pepe Romero. He has been inspired by participation in master classes with such world-famous artists as Eliot Fisk, Sergio and Odair Assad, David Russell, Christopher Parkening and David Starobin. His debut CD, Plainte Calme, includes Elliott Carter’s Changes along with his own arrangements of works by Olivier Messiaen and Claude Debussy. He has also recorded and toured with the Grammy nominated rock band Devotchka. Dr. Echols resides in Austin, Texas. |
